There are plenty of processes that are computationally heavy but not storage heavy. People can also plug in fast external storage if needed.

Interesting deal. Is it worth upgrading from 2021 Apple MacBook M1 Pro 16" 32GB/512GB to this M4 Pro? Don't need really heavy tasks like video editing but also prefer the M4 lighter weight. Smaller screen size is good in some ways too.

The M1 Pro has 10-Core CPU and 16-Core GPU.

i upgraded from an M1 MBA to M4 MBP with the only upgrade being 1tb. yes, the mid-tier MBP for $400 more is the most performance for your buck, but for someone that just goes on youtube and slickdeals like me, i feel that's plenty fast. some may spend the extra $400 just for the extra fan.

as far as storage, this MBP has like thunderbolt 8 or something... so if u have a comparable external drive that should be fine.

What I paid for my MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro/16GB/512GB a while back and it's still rock solid leaving my zero desire to upgrade. So yea, I'd say this is a great price for this beast!

Then you're not running anything that requires these specs. Less than 1tb kills this,
We do video projects that are between 2tb and 8tb in size. An external Thunderbolt SSD works well for this. We don't need a big internal drive. Just enough for operating system, applications, and some scratch disk. This also allows us to work on different projects on the same machine without running out of space.

And yes, the projects get backed up to our main and secondary servers every other day and from there go to cold storage in the cloud.

Your needs are different but do not invalidate others' needs.

It depends. I was listening to a Macbreak Weekly TWiT podcast a while back and one of the hosts was saying how he was able to transcode 6-8 1080p video streams on a base M1 Mac Mini and it was only at ~53% CPU. So it really depends on your needs.
Yeah, I'm torn between both. The M1 Pro is bulky but I like like the extra 8GB RAM. On the other hand, the M4 chips are significantly more powerful. I'm also pretty used to 14" or less laptop sizes. I don't worry that the M1 Pro can meet my needs at this time but it seems the M4 may be significantly more future proof. The current deal is tempting.

Yes, also considered the M3 macbook air. I worry the M3 macbook air might come under heavy strain with the 16GB RAM and get bogged down. That's one of my pet peeves Smilie. From past experience, I've become more generous about RAM. The 24GB MB Air deal is maybe not as slick of a deal as this one.

I picked up the $1,299 MacBook Pro deal week from Best Buy with the 1tb/16gb m3 version.

But I'm curious about future proofing and have read the m4 is a jump forward

I use mostly for web browsing, spreadsheets excel, presentations and email.

Any advice?

Get a chrome laptop, you'll save around $1,450.

You may, but for those of us who utilize Dropbox or Google Drive for primary storage, we do not.

No doubt. I have a $100 chromebook and a $2,500 macbook pro, and I use the chromebook 75% of the time.

I am torn between this and an unopened 14" M3 Pro 18GB/512GB with apple care for $1300 from a friend. I may occasionally touch up photos and videos but otherwise do lightweight work. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
