I have been a loyal user of VARTA brand batteries for years. They were the BMW of alkaline batteries, and far better than the American brands including Duracell.

But the German company sold their consumer battery division to budget Energizer Holdings, which promptly moved production to the Third World. Now, the "Varta" brand is meaningless when it comes to high quality, UNLESS you can find these Made In Germany versions that are still sold in other, non-U.S. markets.

If you search for the corporate VARTA website, which is based in Germany, you will see the history of their alkaline battery development and many decades of consistently high performance products. I wish they had not sold their U.S. market to bottom feeder Energizer, which I always have avoided after getting more than one leaking supposedly brand-new cells and short service life.

I am giving these Made In Indonesia versions ONE star, and have filed a complaint with Amazon that the vendor is misrepresenting these as being the previously high-quality German production. NOT recommended."

To the people saying the deal is dead, it's because you already used the 40% off coupon. I used it in the Raynovac D batteries but decided AA is more useful for me so I canceled that order and was able to use the 40% coupon on this deal instead.

About ten years ago I bought a bunch of Varta batteries on a deal. At the time they were the best batteries I had ever used. I don't know if they're still that good, so take that for what it's worth. I'm definitely willing to give them a try again.

They're made in Indonesia for Energizer Brands LLC according to the box my AA cells came in. YMMV of course with global sourcing the way it is! No verdict on the quality of the batteries as I just got them from the previous 30% off S&S deal.
