For work I'm switching phones multiple times a year.
This Echo Auto works best with iPhones and flagship Google and Samsung phones. Other top tier Android phones have had issues with disconnections. Also if you have multi user enabled on your Android it seems to make the disconnections quite frequent.

The 1st Gen device has worked great in my old Jeep that I had put an upgraded stereo into that features handsfree but I would have to touch thru a bunch of menus while driving to dial a call or change music streaming channels. So directing the robot to make my calls and change my music instead has been worth the $20 bucks. I am hoping this 2nd gen will improve teh Bluetooth connectivity. 90% of the time it has stayed connected.

Amazon killing the list API has really made my desire to invest more in the Alexa infrastructure go down. Previously I could just tell Alexa to add things to my shopping List, and they would appear in the app of my choice on all of my platforms. Now the bed is turned off I don't have much use :-(

Guess I will read what the 2nd offers over the first. Had the first since release, and haven't had a single issue. Mostly just use it for questions in the car and aux connected streaming.

With the spotify car thing being bricked later this year, is this gonna be the alternative?

The first gen alexa auto was a hot piece of shit.

The best thing I liked about the 2 is that it's so small. My USB power AUX input are around the center console arm rest area, so I just leave it hanging out of the arm rest without having to stretch it across closer to the vents to mount, stays out of the way and works just as good.

Couldn't agree more. I have two first gen devices. When they work, they're great. But they so frequently disconnect I honestly never use them anymore. Probably about every other time I try to use it, it tells me it can't connect to my phone and I have to open the Alexa app and re-set up. This is with multiple phones and multiple echo autos.

I've apologized to people I've recommended them to.

Maybe the second gen devices fix some of that.

I had the first gen and worked really well most of the time. Upgraded a couple months ago to the Ver 2 and it worked for a couple weeks and then just stopped connecting to my pixel 7 to use voice commands. Could still stream music through it into my aux and use it for phone calls. Just could not use it in voice control mode. Which is it's primary strength. Switched to a 7 inch touch screen that will run android auto and feeds in through aux input. Best $60 I have spent in a while.

AMEN. I thought it was just me. Trash. Constantly disconnecting and then having to reset the entire thing to sync with your phone over and over. Wasn't worth the effort for even an hour car ride.

This thing has pretty horrible reviews. Is there something similar without an abundance of bad reviews?

I'm assuming if my car already has wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, this isn't needed right? Or is there something this offers that they don't?

This is the most worthless item ever. If you have the Alexa app, which is required to use this device, your phone already does everything. This is just a glorified microphone. I've used my phone as a hands free Alexa device for years.

wow, I clicked on this thread to say the _exact same thing_.
Worst thing to me is that I have to disconnect it (turn off phone Bluetooth usually) to have my phone reliably understand what I'm saying. If I don't, 75% of the time it will do the ding like it is listening, but the speech never gets through to the phone. e.g. texting someone I'm on my way etc.

I hear ya, but my vehicle has no Bluetooth audio connection built in. When this (or the gen1 I guess) works as it should, I prefer it to any Bluetooth > aux adapters I've used. Then there is fun stuff like If I get into my car and see that my kid's lights are on or I forgot to lock the front door, I don't even have to take my phone out of my pocket.

…when it works 🤣
