The major advantage over a cell phone (which will have most of the same functionality soon) is its less likely to be damaged and be made unusable, its form factor, and a simple interface.
lolz at your attempt to be a smart ass and the miserable fails.

this device won't go obsolete for awhile. it's got years of reliable service history behind it. It'll probably get that starlink/tmobile service too.
No doubt this device will have a good year or two until it's obsolete. Can't blame Garmin for doing what they can to recover development and their other costs before then. Interesting they don't just bundle the device and a long subscription together.
I bought SpotX after I went into National forest in Oregon and I was riding for 2 hours on paved road and saw 1 oncoming car, this was broad day time. I'm not going to speculate what would happen if I need help evening time.
But yes, you will need to buy service and sign for monthly/yearly plan.
Besides the claimed improvements in battery life and USB-C interface, the mini2 pairs to the Garmin Explore app (instead of the older Earthmate app) which is marginally more featureful. The mini2 also can use Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS which ought to improve location accuracy and availability (not obvious from my experience that it does). I did the upgrade a while ago and was available to sell off my mini for $200 then - so, the upgrade only cost $200. I tell my self that the "improvements" were worth it
The true cost of this device is in the monthly subscription plan and the device cost will be marginal over the 4-6 years that you will use it.
