I liked the game, but as a mainline Final Fantasy it missed the mark. I've been a monster FF fan since IV on the SNES and I've played almost every single mainline and spinoff game, and this game really does feel more like an action-focused spinoff like Stranger of Paradise than literally every FF before it - You'll notice that SoP didn't get as much attention or criticism as XVI even though XVI is better directly because of this)

they really should have upped the RPG elements here, subquests are useless because rewards are terrible, skill progression is useless because you can undo and redo at any time, items are useless because you only control one person, equipment is useless because it's the most boring linear path. It's a shame because the story is really good, and I love that you watch it straight through or dive in deep with the lore as it's happening. But the game definitely some non-linearity, this is just FF XIII all over again.

Buddy, I got bad news for you. If you felt Remake part 1 was too "drawn out", just save yourself the trouble of getting Rebirth. It is longer and has far more content than Remake in every way.

Unless you're ready to play it within the next few weeks, I would hold off until BF. I have such a massive backlog that I've finally learned to hold off until I actually have the time to play it. At least you'll be able to save a few more bucks by waiting rather than the game just sitting there.

This game was very good imo. Story line was great. Not completely open world like we are used too but still have vast areas to travel around.

Agreed. Super fun overall and some jaw dropping moments / boss fights. Preordered at the time; would def buy at this price.

Personally, I like it a lot better. This is the game I wish final fantasy was when I was 15. It's very action-based, less RPG based. Combat system is exceptional. Voice acting is also exceptional. Story is alright. I don't mind missing the open world stuff because I don't have the patience/time to deal with that stuff any more. I didn't play ff7 remake part 2 yet but part 1 was not my cup of tea. Felt needlessly drawn out at many segments and just became a chore.

The reason it's so action based is because the battle system director for FFXVI is literally the guy who made and refined another popular action game, devil may cry 5. There's a few articles about it, it's pretty interesting.

But I agreed, this is another pretty meh mainline ff. Don't know why they went this route when they gave a perfectly fine battle system already which is the one made for the FF7 remake

Don't listen to the negative reviews. Game is awesome. Graphics are on point, music is great (They won awards on their musical score), mature storyline, fun game play. What more could you ask for in a game?

Yeah that's why I didn't play it yet Smilie might pick it up if it comes to bargain bin prices. The first game dungeons were excruciatingly long for me. Every section whether it was the underground subway, the rafters up to shinra hq, or the lab were all just super repetitive and boring. Sad to hear that it continues to be that way but makes sense since the game sold so well

I have the same sentiment as you on ff7 remake. It's becoming a chore to finish. FF15 was also not very good and I never ended up finishing it
