If you are playing games get a 5800X3D. If you're doing productivity work, get a 5900X
I have had one since it first came out. Love this processor. Agreed if gaming is your priority, get the 5800x3d - trades blows with the top processors even in the next generation in terms of gaming.

In my personal use I need a strong gamer as well as a strong worker. I don't feel shorted at all in terms of gaming and i have 24 threads on tap. runs cool and quiet under a 2x140mm radiator.
Why no drop to the all time low of $274?

I have this paired with a 6800XT and 64GB of ram. The extra cores make everything feel snappy even while multitasking. I doubt getting an X3D chip would benefit me at all gaming at 3440x1440.
Which cooler do u use?

Noctua NH-U12S with the NA-FK1 secondary fan. Temps hit up to 82C but is still practically silent. I'm sure if I changed the fan profile it'd come on a lot earlier.
Thanks. I will use 360mm AIO on my 5900x build soon. It runs hot for sure

Micro Center is also matching this for $289.99 (https://www.microcenter.com/produ...t-included), and I assume you could also use the new customer $25 off coupon (https://www.microcenter.com/site/....aspx?rd=1)

I recently watched a tech tuber video which mentioned if spending $300 or more on a CPU, you might as well move to the next platform (mentioned 7800x3d). If you wanted to stay on AM4, the last hurrah was the 5700x. That being said, shrugged shoulders was given when mentioned about upgrading from 3700x to 5700x.

Main thing is I'm not satisfied with am5 mobo prices and intel not that much better.. that combined with high latency ddr5 means current gen IS not worthy of an upgrade at least for another year.

I agree with you in regards to the pricing of AM5 boards. I have a X570 Taichi. If I wanted to get an AM5 board that is ATX and same number of sata ports, I'm either getting X670 Taichi ($500, on sale for $400) or the MSI Godlike ($1200+).

The higher ddr5 latency ram and premium for 2 x16 slots is just not worth it on Am5.. hopefully things will change in a year or 2

I made the switch from 3600 to 5700x and the difference was quite noticeable. Was also able to stay on AM4, didn't need to upgrade my 750watt psu, hit the chip lottery underclocked and couldn't be happier with the 5700x. The increase to Multitasking snappiness is life changing. That said I went on to buy a refurbished $520 zotac 3080 LHR 12gb gpu (upgrade from a 2070) and I think that's the end of this PCs upgrade path for me, the returns from buying higher class components will only net me single digit performance gains and I personally game on a 1440p 165hz +500nits monitor. I'd want to go 4K 120hz oled next and let's be honest I'm not shelling out close to a thousand each for a new monitor and graphics card to game at 4K 120hz any time soon.

I have a MINISFORUM Venus Series NAB6 Mini PC, 12th Gen Core i7-12650H. Can I switch this out with this for better productivity proformance? The current setup is 32 ddr4 with 64 ddr5 in the mail.
Along with what iota said, DDR4 cannot be interchanged with DDR5 btw.

IMO go with Intel if using Plex. The difference with QuickSync for transcoding is huge.
What if you run a dedicated graphic card for transcoding?
