The brand is made by SKIL. They have been making tools since 1929. They are excellent consumer level tools, but they won't stack up to the performance of the top tier brands. Some Worx trools are produced by SKIL, and they are pretty great tools in my experience.

Skil is not the brand it used to be. It was acquired by Chervon and is now a consumer brand, unlike the professional-grade tools they were once known for. Denali is their Amazon-exclusive budget badge. Chervon also makes FLEX (Lowe's house brand) and EGo. They're probably fine but these offshoot brands come and go and you probably shouldn't assume product support or compatible replacement batteries beyond a few years.

What's a good brand for a newbie?

Depends on a lot of factors: budget, usage, types of projects, etc. Check out the respective product lineups for each of the brands...Makita, Dewalt, Bosch, Ryobi, Milwaukee...and see what makes sense for what you intend to do. Sticking with one (or two) battery platforms is the most economical way to build a collection as it will allow you to use a handful of batteries in a wide array of tools. You can add to your collection by buying bare tools (without battery) at a lower price point.

Ryobi will be your best bang-for-buck consumer brand and the other four are geared a bit more towards the trades, depending on the trim level. Most brands also have 12v lines which are surprisingly capable in most cases.

This is a very nice little circular saw for most homeowners. There's always going to be elitist coming in saying Milwaukee is better and this can't cut things, or that it will break. I'd be willing to bet this little saw could do more work than most of those men ever have.

I bought a low tier Porter Cable set 15 years ago that is still going strong. People talked plenty of garbage on it back then. I thought it was funny when I saw the expert builder "Essential Craftsman" using it recently on YouTube.

I have mainly Ridgid tools now, but I still like the lighter duty Porter Cable tools for lighter duty tasks. I'd highly recommend you buy some afforable tools, invest the savings, and buy better tools with the earnings once you figure out what you need.

I recommended ryobi and get called an elitist. That's hilarious.

I'm not talking about you at all, but if the shoe fits, wear it.

I like the value of Ryobi tools a lot. For that matter all of TTI tools have been pretty great in my experience.

Ryobi is good if you don't already have other brands and want to expand. They have a ton of tools with compatible batteries. I switched everything to Ryobi after getting a couple of things on sale and then seeing how often Home Depot and DirectToolsOutlet offer good deals on them.

I've been happy with everything so far. I'm sure if I was a professional I'd probably go with another brand but for my needs (light remodeling and woodworking) they've been great.

i'm a Milwaukee guy but if i could start over i'd go for ridgid because in end i think rigid had the best value because of their lifetime service agreement.

Mostly agree with what you said. Keep in mind, Skil has a web page that offers a warranty and some support in the USA. My experience with Amazon is, 30 day returns and that is all you get. Chervon makes store brands for Lowes and Menards. Those two stores offer a store warranty, usually 2- or 3-years replacement. There is no parts service at these stores. If you lose the arbor screw, good luck finding another one.
