I bought this last time it was on sale. I have some easy to drive Klipsch HT speakers and it sounds great.
If the 7100 fits your needs then this is a good price. The RZ50 has some features that this one doesn't. More processing power (11 vs 9 channels), full set of pre-outs for external amplification and more power (120 vs 100). If one or more of those are important to you then the RZ50 would be a better choice.
Having been in the AV game for over 30yrs, i'd say No, it won't. 20 watt difference will be imperceivable. And the "quality" of the audio won't be any different on these mass market mainstream avr's.
Pre-outs are nice, but a teeny tiny minority of avr owners ever actually use them.
I'd say get this deal and on the small chance you actually find yourself needing "more" in the near future, you should have no problem getting most of your money back selling this.
I think most ppl would wind up keeping this, though.

Atmos guidelines are for ceiling height of 7.5 to 12 feet.
Right. The height (sorry, I used the wrong term earlier) overhead channels would sit up front at ~7-8 ft above the floor (aimed at the front listeners) so that should be good. I say that, but need to verify that configuration is a thing with Atmos + this receiver. But that doesn't solve for the wireless rear speaker request from the wife. I feel like Onkyo is late to the game with an integrated wireless speaker solution like Yamaha and Sony. I'm keeping one eye open for a Yamaha V6A/A2A deal as well.

Dang it! I jumped on the Denon 2800H last month and this seems like a better model for the price! Ahhh, shucks!

pre-outs are for if one integrates a dedicated amp into their setup?
Yes. It is for bypassing the built in amps. Lots of folks talk about this feature, but in reality very very few people ever use it once they live with the avr and realize the avr amps drive their speakers fine. You'll find out right away if the power isn't sufficient.

Is this worth upgrading from the Onkyo 6xx series for Dirac? Would spending for an additional mic or software change that?

Only you can answer that but if you look at past post, it's hit or miss on how well Dirac will work.

This comes with the mic and no additional software needed.

Keep in mind you only get Dirac Live with no option for Dirac Live Bass Control(DLBC).

Tempting although I think I will wait out for a deal on the RZ50.
If you are open to open box S&S has it for $999.

rz50 was a bit too big for my tv stand for proper cooling and satisfied with the nr7100 for my current needs. Connected to 9 speakers and a subwoofer. Don't think I need much more for my current living room, but to each their own.

The NR7100 hits a real sweet spot amongst AV receiver IMO. For me once you get in to the RZ50 territory, it really starts to warrant a dedicated or semi-dedicated theater.

I had recently picked up the Sony AZN1000 based on reviews but could never get the audio to sound right to my ears. I'd had Onkyo's in the past and was planning on replacing the Sony with the NR6100, but at $650 the NR7100 is an absolute steal. Purchased it last time this deal was posted and couldn't be happier. Audio out of the box was noticeably better than the Sony (to my ear) and Dirac calibrated was better still.

I've always been a Denon guy forever now, the RZ50 for $1k is a smoking deal for what it offers.

Dam, too bad it was not in the budget right now or I would be all over that... and sell my Denon AVR-X6200W....

Nothing wrong with mine besides I want HDMI 2.1 support. Arc is a PIA...

I too ultimately prefer Denon.
After auditioning the RZ50 vs 3800, easy choice was the 3800 for $1k for me.

On top of preferred sound you get 4 independent sub outs (vs 2 mono), all channels are assignable, preamp mode for each channel and come next year the option for Dirac Live Bass Control!
A big pleasant surprise has been Audyssey's new directional sub integration!
Makes it much much easier to wait for DLBC, if I decide to purchase it!

Am I missing something?
The biggest difference is that rz50 has DIRAC.

This offers Dirac Live also, it's the preouts, slightly more power & processes 11 channels that are the difference.

Keep in mind if you process 11 channels with the RZ50, 10 & 11 can only be externally powered they cannot be reassigned.

I've been out of the AVR space for a while and appreciate feedback on user interfaces with Onkyo and the other mainstreem brands. My most recent reference point in sthe Onkyo TX-NR809 which has been a solid 5.1 setup minus the HDMI repair issues and the horrible GUI. The current Onkyo is driving late 90'S Infinity Composure Overature all around and I can see those being upgraded soon too.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Still using the 809 as well. Mainly want to upgrade for 4k; still satisfied with the sound.
