simple explanation: electricity on ships is delivered differently than the electricity in your house. if/when you overload a circuit, the surge protection on a power strip will "trip" and cut off electricity. but on a cruise ship circuit, a "tripped" surge protector will still work meaning the electricity will still flow normally. this can easily cause a fire and fire on a boat (especially an electrical fire) is a very, very bad thing.

complicated explanation (courtesy of the US Coast Guard) https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/...evices.pdf
The launch Nintendo Switch, which will draw the most power out of the various Switch models, pulls 15W [gamespot.com]. Amazon's page says that the USB-C ports are max 20W and 30W when all four USB ports are being used for charging. Even if everything is plugged into this dock, it should still charge a Nintendo Switch OLED just fine.

Of course, if anyone thinks I missed anything then let me know!

EDIT: Corrected "OLED Switch" with "Launch Switch"; changed from "7W" to "15". Updated source URL.
This is not a deal. This is always on sale $35 with a coupon on Amazon. Just saying. The Anker products in Amazon are their normal prices. I don't understand why Amazon is marking it a a Prime Day deal.

They can take my surge device from my cold dead hands. I won't use it shipboard of course just don't tell me I "can't take it" Wink

That is pretty interesting: 'two cases attributed'' to surge protectors when "a ground had developed on another circuit." So only two events out of millions of uses and only when there is a combination of things (one which should not occur in the first place) happening at the same time? LOL.

But I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. At most only puts a mild theorical risk to anyone's onboard electronics forgoing the use of a surge protector. Cruise ships are so densely packed (and no where to go) so a major fire could kill hundreds or thousands of people.
"a ground developing on another circuit" is a short circuit and one of the big things that can cause a fire. in theory, a surge protector will instantly trip and cut off power. but this style surge protector will still work on a cruise ship circuit even when its tripped which is no bueno

I got one of these because I could find a surge protector with a flat AC plug like this one has. Big mistake. I cannot fast charge my phone and use any of the other ports (regular charging a wireless controller for example) at the same time. I don't understand much about electricity and outputs, but this thing definitely ain't a surge protector.

i think you are talking about the other one with only 1 USB-C outlet. This one has two.

So I bought the White one of these and found that it works fine. Charges fast and works great! I also found a Walmart Brand Onn. version that has 2 USB-C and 1 USB-A that does not have fast charge but it is thinner and cheaper and works for me as well.

I don't think it is a good deal for what it is.

Just don't use more wattage than the plug you use on the ship is rated for. They are usually all listed on them, Ie 120 watts vs a hair dryer circuit of 1250 or more. If your comment is true there is no difference between plugging any other overloaded item (hairdryer.)

I purchased a similar multipurpose Anker charger and the USB ports died on me shortly after the warranty expired. The AC outlets still work but at that point, it's not serving its purpose anymore.

I've noticed a lot of the items on my wishlist with the "Prime Big Deal" tags, only one is more than 5% off the normal going rate. Amazon's basically in late stage capitalism now with way too much power/control through their monopoly.

It's been $65.99 since about Memorial Day this year... with a $24 off coupon seemingly meant to juice the record.

Today's sale is $65.99 - $24 = $41.99

Huh. Not a sale!

(You're thinking of a different model priced $35 where Anker played a similar game with perma-coupons turned sales.)

I agree that Amazon is screwing with their Prime Days lately. The strike through is either inflated for prime day so % looks bigger off or they go weak on it and call it a Prime Day deal. It's definitely not like it used to be where scores and scores of quality items had major discounts. These days it's a ton of random things we don't need and most of it Chinese garbage.

Not trolling but why can't this be taken on cruise ships? Seems random
Agreed

Haaave one and used it on a 13-day cruise with Holland America Cruse lines within the last two months.

Just FYI they have a 700 series product that is similar. The trade off is GaNPrime (more efficient, less heat, PowerIQ 4.0) for one fewer AC plug and $20 more.
