The single reason I have never bought AirPods is the hard plastic inserts. Objectively they are horrible. The sound suffers because it doesn't create a seal at all , they slip out because there's no friction between the bud and your skin, and the unmalleable shape makes it factually impossible to fit your ear to the most potential comfort possible . To this day I don't understand why the original AirPod design even exists . Apple would agree with me considering their AirPod pros infer all of this .

BTW... how do these Anker buds sound? I know I'm not getting $250 audio quality but are they at least not tinny-sounding?

Can't speak for this model specifically, but I've owned at least 4 Anker earbud products including a low-cost pair of truly-wireless like the ones in this deal and all have sounded good. Certainly not tinny (and I have owned some other brands that are).

I can't get hard earbuds to stay in my ear. They are also extremely painful after only a few minutes. I don't understand why any company would make such a design.

Anker Soundcore products are usually a solid bang for your buck even at full retail. Haven't tried these yet, but I'm sure they're a good value for the $.
