Assuming I had the proper transfer switch and everything installed, could this run a 14 SEER 5 Ton heat pump during a power outage?

5 ton is about 5 to 6 KW so yes

I've seen some decent deals on these 10k plus dual fuels recently and want to pull the trigger but I'm afraid of how they're going to look after delivery. I've been hoping Lowes or home depot would have a deal so if there were issues with the shipping, I could just load it up and return it.

Personally just dealt with this, the 13000w version of this generator would turn over and backfire. Amazon's policy is refund and NO returns. Due to explosive and/or hazardous materials they ask to dispose or donate.

Turned out it was just a sparkplug issue on mine.

Portable style generator. What can you even safely run on these?

Depending on your house size, you could run your entire house on one of these...assuming you're not utilizing a bunch of 10-15 amp devices at once.

I was looking at this previously (when it had the 5% off coupon in addition to this price) but didn't feel like I had all the information needed to make a best decision.

Things to consider:
-If wanting to hook up to your house, the cost of a transfer switch or do you DIY it
-If running propane, do you use 20# (or more) tanks, or do you use a home propane connection and split it (assuming you have propane and not natural gas/electric heating)
-What precautions are needed for sensitive electrical devices, as you're not supposed to run computers, routers, phone charges and some TVs on a generator without going through a battery backup system

I'm sure there's more, as I'm trying to research more into using a portable generator for a whole home power backup system rather than a true standby unit as there's more monthly maintenance/cost associated with those units.

Got this and the power was too dirty for a lockout/back feed on my house. Most of the breakers wouldn't even turn on.

Probably not, you would need a soft start kit before it would work. I have the same seer and tonnage and my surge was 14k watts. With soft start lowered it to 7k surge. This thing guzzles fuel at 1 gallon per hour. I would wait for open frame inverter at 7k+ continous. My 7k runs my 5 ton

A normal size house. I have a 10000 watt model, it can run mostly everything but dryer, AC and full size oven

What would be a good price for one of those?
I'm also worried about my panel not accepting dirty power. Although most people around me seem to use these "regular" generators just fine.

This is exactly my worry with a portable generator. I'm eyeing some of those $900 Champion inverters with an NG conversion kit.

I have never heard of a panel not "accepting dirty power." Circuit breakers trip from overcurrent conditions and don't sense voltage or frequency. The one exception might be that GFCI breakers might not cooperate with a generator with a bonded neutral, but generator manuals almost always specify how to make or break neutral bonding.

Around $850 (same price). Cleaner power and better fuel economy https://dealquestnow.online/share/android_app/fp/777445

My surge with my 5-ton is 187amps and my 4-ton was in the 15x amp range inrush. That said, I put softstarts on for multiple reasons. I haven't tried to turn them over on my 7KW generator but there are a lot of folks that run them with softstarts on the 12000/13000 with NG conversions.

It's currently $1300 and is much less power (13KW starting vs. 8750 starting, 9KW running vs. 7KW running). That said I would go with the inverter anyday. I have the wen 875i which is the same as the champion and did a tri-fuel conversion on it.
