Really? Their FAQ states: "DuroMax portable generators will output an industry standard total harmonic distortion (THD) rating of about 12%-20% depending on load applied. They will produce a sine wave, not a modified or square wave. This is perfectly acceptable for running common commodities found in your home such as TVs, computers, your appliances, etc."

Is there a way to filter out or stabilize the distortion factor?
(I know nothing about THD.)

AC voltage stabilizers are always an option

Compare that to the smaller WEN inverter posted yesterday with a THD of 0.5%. This is 24-40x dirtier. This thing is cheap for a reason. 5-6% should be the goal for running electronics you care about. Tools, fridge, etc aren't going to matter and this is great for that.

As an aside, I have had this Duromax generator (same exact model, except mine is 10k instead of 12k) and have run it many times over the years. I have multiple computers, TVs, a home theater with a full 7.1 surround sound system with a receiver and subwoofer as well as plenty of other "fancy" equipment… I've never had a problem. And nobody I've known who have had standard generators have ever had a problem.

The only thing you should be concerned about is not pushing your generator to its absolute maximum. If there's any doubt, size up because "browning out" can cause issues and maybe cause damage (rare, but can happen).

But unless you have grandpa in your home on an iron lung, I really really wouldn't lose any sleep over THD.

THD is a made up stat designed to sell expensive inverter generators. Power fluctuation occurs even on normal line power. If your electronics couldn't handle power fluctuations, they'll already have built in power conditioners or you'd already be experiencing issues with them and you would need a separate power conditioner.

Your electronics will work just fine on a regular generator like this.

With that said, inverters are better in other ways. Mainly noise. This generator is LOUD. Really loud. Assuming you're using it as a home emergency backup, it shouldn't matter because when the power goes out, everyone will just have to deal with it… it's an emergency. But if you're hauling this monster to a worksite or if you're a food truck serving customers, you probably want to avoid this and get an inverter for the sake of everyone's hearing.

So yeah, make sure you get a generator that can easily handle more than your need (you never want to be close to maxing it out, inverter or not). Also remember that 12000 is the peak/starting wattage, actual running watts is lower. And that rating is for gasoline. Propane has lower wattage output.

So as long as you are respectful with the overall load, I wouldn't pay any mind to "DiRtY pOwEr" and your electronics; they'll be just fine. And remember that for household use, this is intended to be an emergency backup generator. You won't be running your home on it 24/7/365. Your TVs, computers and other electronics will be just fine no matter what… but especially if it's only a couple hours, a day or two at most?? A lot of people panicking over nothing for absolutely ZERO reason. laugh out loud
