I have a 2 bay TR-002 for backup, simple and easy to use with my NAS. You can easily check and manage the expansion storage in QTS interface. My only complaint is the storage capacity since I have a RAID 1, so you are in the market to get a DAS or NAS expansion, I would recommend a 4 bay.

Not only that, the performance of the 4 bay one is higher.

Correction: It is actually the opposite. The 2 bay one has slightly higher rate but with limited RAID option because of only 2 bay.

It is actually the other way around. TR-002 has faster USB.

Can this thing be connected to an old laptop or something to create an home Nas? I've never seen one of those.

This has been around for a few years. It is mainly for expanding NAS capacity but can also be used for PC if it has USB3.0/3.2 port. The original MSRP was $200 at release and that has gone up last year. The lowest price I saw was $169 at BH that sold out quickly. The 2 bay version is slightly faster but less flexible in RAID setup. This is one of the cheapest options to add RAID array to a system. There are multiple bay enclosures that are cheaper but mostly without RAID.

So if I already have the four bay QNAP TS 451 what would be the main point of this? I am not low on storage so I'm thinking I would just use my spare drives to fill this up and every month or so make a backup of my existing nas? Does that make sense or waste of money? I already have enough drives to fill it up

I have this. It can be used standalone or to expand. It is just seen as a large harddisk. But with a QNAP NAS, you can check individual disk health, etc...

This is a DAS and it make sense to backup your NAS if you have important data. If you don't need extra storage, just use the DAS as a cold storage incase your NAS die, you don't lose all of your data.

B&H also match this at 175 + no tax using payboo so saved about 20 dollars more in taxes.

qnap
the ultimate hacked machine
practically monthly
no thanks

Since January, thousands of QNAP customers using the company's NAS devices have reported being attacked by the DeadBolt ransomware group, which demands a ransom of 0.03 Bitcoin ($1,100) for the decryption key.
After the initial attacks affecting about 3,600 devices January, the group continued to resurface with campaigns in March, May, and June this year. Reddit and other message boards have been flooded with customers lamenting the loss of files that included family photo albums, wedding videos and more. Dozens of users took to Reddit to complain that they were among those attacked in the latest campaign.
In a note to QNAP, the hackers demanded 5 Bitcoin ($93,900) to reveal details about the alleged zero-day vulnerabilities they initially used to attack its users and another 50 Bitcoin ($939,000) to release a master decryption key that would unlock all of the victims' files.
QNAP would not say if it has considered paying the ransom for the universal decryption key when asked by The Record but a spokesperson said the company's research has shown the group is attacking "legacy versions with known vulnerabilities which have security updates available."

While that might be notable for evaluating QNAP as a brand, it's not of much relevance for a DAS product specifically.

It is great for that. I am currently running multiple NAS as timed backup. This would be a much cheaper and more efficient way for that.
