Yeah, that's intentionally confusing -- thank Lenovo for that. It's not a T500, it's a P14s. They love to throw in letters and numbers to confuse with previous model numbers.

Just like the "G2i" moniker -- it's some variation of their 2nd gen of the P14s, which in itself is a second gen (hence the s for "second"). So is it the third version? Fourth? No idea. And that's probably the way they like it. No easy way to compare like items.

Suggestion -- It'd be so much easier if they made a P13 -> P14 -> P15...or P2023 -> P2024 -> P2025. Using years has worked excellently for cars to differentiate between versions of the same model line. But they don't do that, and given we're dealing with some of the most detail-oriented, intelligent, profit and results-focused people in the world (tech industry)....it cannot be an accident they're behaving this way.

Honest assessment of the machine:

- It's an older processor, as is common with refurbs. Not great, not terrible. It's Windows 11 compatible.

- The 16gb ram + 256gb SSD is middling at best -- these are specs you'd expect to find in an entry-level machine from 2015. I'm unsure of the upgradeability of this particular machine, so it might be a trivial exercise + mild cost to upgrade it. Thankfully, Lenovo is more user-friendly than Apple in this regard.

- The display is questionable -- it's a 1080p 14" panel. I'm assuming it's IPS, though a quick google search hasn't confirmed that. A 16:9 panel is really low-end -- you'd be expecting 16:10 or 3:2 anymore. You put this side-by-side with an Apple Macbook Air 13" M-series (any version), and the difference will be night and day, in favor of Apple's MBA with at least 2560x1600 resolution at 16:10 aspect ratio. One point in favor of the Lenovo.... touch is nice.

- The price for a refurb is over twice of competitors. You have Dell refurbs in the $125-250 range with 32gb ram + 512gb ssd (with similar dated Intel CPUs).

(I've seen Apple Macbook Air M1 laptops go for $300 for 8gb/128gb barebone models (hard pass) or for $500 for a 16gb/1tb (very reasonable). For a mere $133 more, you can get something significantly better in nearly every way -- unless you have a need for "Windows".)

- The P-series chassis is....well, although it's not terrible (and a far better chassis than most plastic meh-tastic laptops from HP & Dell), it's a far cry from the well-renowned T-series and X-series.

Processor is a little dated and the screen leaves a lot to be desired, as with most thinkpads, but this is built like a tank. With 16GB this is solid for web, office, etc and should work for a long time.

This model is T500. Does that make it a T series and built like a tank?

That's not the model, that's the dedicated graphics card. The model is P14s.

G2i? Never heard them use this marketing term before.

This is a 2nd gen P14s with intel though. Perfectly fine laptop and decent price. I always prefer to buy them used at an even lower price.

If I were in need of a laptop for college or something right now this is pretty good.

I have been tempted to invest in a used ThinkPad when my current laptop goes I don't really even care if it's an old chip. but I do want upgradable RAM and relative upgrade ability and repairability. I know one over think pads have lost some of that magic over the years but I don't know when the slope really hits. so I definitely have to do some research. I've been following this YouTube channel Salem tech repairs or something and he's numb pivoting into refurbishing ThinkPads instead of doing repair shop out of Salem Mass. it was tempted to order one from him but... I'm not 100% sure. just can't justify spending a lot of money on a Windows laptop because OS frustrates me so much. used think pad or a legion go or something quirky like that would at least be cheaper and kind of fun.

could switch to Linux and I probably will at some point on a secondary device but I don't quite know if I'm ready to make the plunge entirely. maybe a steam deck would be a good way to dip my toe in the water
