FYI this has a modified sine wave. With an MSRP of $200 I had hopes for a pure sine wave.

I was wondering if I could use this to allow my EV battery to charge or even run something during a power outage. I could connect the inverter to the 12v battery, turn the car on (which charges the 12v battery from the large traction battery that runs the electric motors), and then use it to run something under 1000w. For those of you more steeped in this realm, would welcome thoughts.

if you're sure the 12v will be recharged it should work, but might want to look for a pure sine wave inverter instead.

In a Tesla, the 12 V cigarette lighter is connected to the 12 or 16V battery. It is not connected to the high voltage battery that powers the car

So modified sine wave is not good? I can't tell the difference. Wish I could understand what this basically does with car.

anecdotal story, I wanted to run a heated blanket off a modified sine wave inverter. It just wouldn't turn on. Looked it up and that is common due to less magic in the wave. specifically was the 80v kobalt battery inverter.

It doesn't do anything to your car, it's more about what's plugged in to the outlets. If you want to plug basically anything you want into your inverter, then pure sine wave is the way to go. With a modified sine wave, more sensitive electronics tend not to do too well and might behave weirdly or not work at all

this is commonly done in the EV community for blackouts. Most people get a dedicated pure sine wave inverter that can handle the load and attach it to the auxiliary car battery with Anderson connectors. While leaving the car on, you can power refrigerators and sump pumps too

Home Depot sells Ecoflow generators. The 800w version is way more useful than this Ryobi. More expensive but worth it. For a little more money get the 1800w. This is the one I have and I use it all the time. You can also connect solar panels to it. They're awesome devices. Get them directly from Ecoflow sometimes on sale.

My Nissan Leaf charges the 12V battery while it's turned off. I've seen people hook up 1,000W inverters. I read somewhere that the internal DC-DC is capable of 2,000W, but internal electronics use 500W, so 1,500W max usable.
FYI 12V lead acid batteries tend to go bad on electric cars. It turns out that the massive current of starting an ICE car does some desulfating that keeps the battery healthy. My 12V battery died, but I brought it back with a desulfator. I recommend anyone still using lead acid on an electric car run a desulfator once or twice a year.
