What he's trying to say (Not because he's experiencing it but because he heard youtubers saying it is a problem) is that the game has to start caching onto the storage device (nvme in this case) because it ran out of VRAM, which games will do when they can't buffer into the VRAM anymore.
The problem is that even at 1440P, this isn't currently an issue on lower midrange cards. You'd have to induce this problem by turning up the settings PAST what this card is capable of. So in the end VRAM is a non issue because even if it had the extra VRAM, the card isn't strong enough to run those settings anyways......not not really issue.... you have to adjust your settings according to the hardware you have. Even if the VRAM was 3x as much, you can't crank EVERYTHING to max and think it'll be ok. Sadly the internet and many youtubers have been selling this "VRAM FIXES ALL" myth for too long.
If you need more VRAM, then obviously there are other options.... but this card is still fine on VRAM w/ the power it has.

your kid is trying to get a GPU upgrade, I don't think you can VRAM switch like you can with RAM, at least for gaming. there may be applications like rendering, this isn't my area of knowledge, but gaming is far too latency dependent for this to make any sense.

I sat there and watched him do it. I told him you can only allocate Ram. He showed me you can do both.

Does this on Tarkov. Both when he's playing on 1440, and 1080, although less often, even on low settings. VRAM is the issue. You're somewhat right, but wrong. It's not just settings, it's bad coding. There's no reason 12GB shouldn't easily handle 1080. I'm guessing there's leaks, they're not clearing unused variables/models whatever, and it just keeps piling into the ram. 16 is the least i would recommend with any game made from 2023 and onwards. I wouldn't personally upgrade into anything less than 24 for future proofing through..

Been playing with arduino type boards for about 15 years, building computers for 25, and taught myself programming when there were things that i needed to do that wasn't readily available for data collection and analysis first on sql, then json when i ran into the limitations of SQL. I've built mining pools, written trading programs, set and flashed hundreds of video cards with a self made bios. I personally write my own timings when overclocking ram, and then test for days to make sure it's stable. Figured out how to control relay boards when the instructions were only in chinese, and their code didn't work. Ive forgotten more than most people ever learn about computers. Stack overflow, github/gitlab and thingiverse are far more useful tools than youtube for learning about computer related stuff.

Ahh yes Tarkov. That's a poor optimization and bad coding like you said. Even 16GB wouldn't save you if the bug shows up. There's plenty of people reporting memory leak issues even on higher VRAM cards (including 16GB+). Once memory leak occurs, amount of VRAM becomes irrelevant, it's just matter of when the problems will start.
Outside of any poorly coded games, 12GB is still acceptable for this caliber card, especially at 1080p (most popular resolution still) and even 1440P. The supposed issue has been way overblown and often have to go out of your way to make it a problem.
There's a balance between cost, features, and performance. Too much emphasis is going into amount of VRAM as if it's the end all and it's pushing people to make bad purchasing decisions because they feel more VRAM is better, they end up with card like 5060ti/9060XT 16gb when 5070 would have been a better buy (especially since the price of it has inched not too far off from what 5070 costs). Since those cards have 16gb VRAM, are you saying your recommendation would be to get a 5060ti/9060XT 16gb over 5070 if one can afford one just because it has more VRAM?
As for upgrading into 24gb+.... sure, but they aren't going to cost the same. It always comes down to cost, features, performance and lastly what is available to the consumer. Right now in the $500-550 price point, there isn't anything better...AMD had a chance with 9070 but fumbled it because they can't get prices down to MSRP.
Also, People also often forget their dollar isn't what it was 10 years ago. They want to compare to old cards and old prices but if you drill down, the pricing hasn't changed for XX70 series for over a decade. After adjusting for inflation, 970 was $447 adjusted, 1070 was $510 adjusted, 2070 was $655 adjusted, 3070 was $620 adjusted and 4070 was $639 adjusted.... so price wise, not much has changed IMO.
I own RTX 5070 and I love it. It plays anything in 4K with dlss and frame gen. If you don't mind occasional mini blurriness It is a pretty decent card.

Outside of any poorly coded games, 12GB is still acceptable for this caliber card, especially at 1080p (most popular resolution still) and even 1440P. The supposed issue has been way overblown and often have to go out of your way to make it a problem.
