The Ultra-5 version performs as well or better than the Ultra-7 version, because of power limits and thermals.

This is a really good buy, IF:

You use it as a mini pc... A bettery power and portable mini pc.
It has Thunderbolt, so you can add an eGPU when home.
This can play plenty of PC games. Not as good as the Ally, but it's decent. Watch some videos.
Great for emulation.
I'm willing to bet that performance has increased a lot since launch, over one year ago. Drivers were a huge thing at launch and MSI/Intel have released a lot of drivers since.

A steam deck is a better buy than this handheld sadly. Wish this thing was rocking AMD like the ROG Ally

With enough updates these runny pretty okay. I'd say on par with z1 Non extreme.

It's a good buy at this price though, right? The Deck is definitely showing its age now

Nah this i5 Intel chip has horrid performance, even the i7 model performs noticeably worse than an rog ally. I can't imagine the i5 is any better. That's why this model probably has similar or worse performance than a steam deck. I guess if you really don't want to install windows on a steam deck this might be a good buy. However the ROG Ally 2 is around the corner meaning the original Ally is going to get steep discounts for Black Friday.

This comes close to Z2 performance when updated to the latest drivers and changing some settings in the advanced firmware ( less so for the Ultra 5 than the Ultra 7). Great for people who like to tweak their rig. It also has thunderbolt connection. I have the Ultra 7 version and don't regret it at all.

If you're ok with Windows, I would wait for a sale and buy an open-box or refurbished ASUS ROG Ally with the Z1 Extreme chipset. You'll be much better off.

I got the Ultra 7 for $280 from target and I don't think it's worth it even at that price. I'm going to offload it soon and get a refurbished steamdeck.

SteamOS only runs on the AMD chipset for those who don't know.
