The non-contact device is quite disappointing. It tends to shut off or turn on randomly after a few uses. They have a short lifespan. I need to insert a piece of copper between the battery and the spring inside to ensure consistent operation.

Maybe you got a bootleg one from Amazon?

I've got one of these in each of my toolboxes, and I lose them long before they ever wear out.

These don't replace your volt meter entirely, but in older homes where all the cloth wiring is the same color, it finds the Hot mighty quick.
