I suppose it depends on how much you will use it. Winter time I have humidifiers running in five bedrooms and we use distilled water in each. We put it up on the way out in the morning and it shuts itself off. We usually go strong with making "batches" for a day or two which lasts a bit and store it in empty water bottles.

Is this safe for baby formula? We used normal filtered water for our first kid but I know they say you're supposed to do distilled water

Honestly, depending where you live, probably cheaper buying RO water from a local place. It's 70-80 cents a gallon here. To make distilled water with this thing, you'd burn about 2.6 kWh per gallon, and at a cost of 30+ cents per kWh, plus the cost of the machine itself...just doesn't make sense.

I got a similar one in 2019 and it works great. I have it run every night.
Also came in handy during COVID when store were out of distilled water

Yours is definitely low. 13 cents is slightly lower than precovid prices in N Texas

The "price to compare" the utility companies provide is just the rate for consumption. They also have a delivery rate for all the infrastructure. All in, my rate is about 33 cents per kWh.

I thought lower prices were a perk to the deregulation, pick a better plan? I moved out of that shit hole after the Cancun Cruz incident where I had lost power for nearly an entire week and good ole republicans blamed renewables for the gas turbines not being winterized and failing, the only perk was the plans I choose were 5-10 cents/kWh and good mexican food.

I run this exact model during winter overnight when time of use is lower, it isn't wasted electricity as I generate distilled water for humidifiers at ~$0.30/gal (compared to $1.50/gal in local grocery store) and the electricity is directly dumped out to heat my home. Only con is frequent cleaning of the residual from the tap water

Leave vinegar overnight or with a ultrasonic mixer to remove the hard water deposits

running at night during offpeak hrs, 7.6 cents/kwh for me so about 22 cents vs $1.25 to buy it, I'd break even just past 30 gallons. Plus, at home convenience, no plastic jugs, etc.
