Honestly, depending where you live, probably cheaper buying RO water from a local place. It's 70-80 cents a gallon here. To make distilled water with this thing, you'd burn about 2.6 kWh per gallon, and at a cost of 30+ cents per kWh, plus the cost of the machine itself...just doesn't make sense.
Also came in handy during COVID when store were out of distilled water

The "price to compare" the utility companies provide is just the rate for consumption. They also have a delivery rate for all the infrastructure. All in, my rate is about 33 cents per kWh.
I run this exact model during winter overnight when time of use is lower, it isn't wasted electricity as I generate distilled water for humidifiers at ~$0.30/gal (compared to $1.50/gal in local grocery store) and the electricity is directly dumped out to heat my home. Only con is frequent cleaning of the residual from the tap water

Leave vinegar overnight or with a ultrasonic mixer to remove the hard water deposits
