Wool is better for most things, but lacks durability for daily wear. I have a couple of Smartwool tops for ski trip base layer, but got this one for hiking....

You can see in a lot of reviews that the REI merino tends to develop holes quickly so ymmv.

I despise REI (and all) labeling on gear (most esp. when the logo is on the chest!). Happily this color *only* has no label printed on it, only a teeny tag I can slice off. So I'm in!
