I'm torn between this V version vs the Retroid Pocket Classic. RPC just missing the joysticks…but regular price is $130, and rated as perfect ps2 emu. How bad is it without the joysticks?

ive heard good things about the 406v so i recommend getting that one. If you want something better than that then you would probably go straight for the retroid pocket 5 or retroid pocket flip 2. Or another option would be to wait for the retroid pocket 6.

Been running an RG406H since it came out. Perfect for all 4:3 screen ratio consoles. Thinking about picking up the RG406V just for a different form factor since I already know it plays everything I want it too 4:3-wise.

Consider which PS2/GC titles you are interested in playing. If JRPG heavy, get the Classic as you won't miss the joystick.

I have the 405v which looks really similar and don't like it at all. I don't have huge hands and the rear buttons are so cramped to reach they're basically useless. If you're planning to play games that use them a lot I would consider something else. it's good quality construction and works well, but isn't very comfortable to use

You really want to buy a device with no joysticks to play PS2 games.....

especially when vertical consoles are much less ergonomic than horizontal

get the 406h if you plan on playing PS2

A great price for a great handheld. I wouldn't consider the RPC useful for anything beyond some PS1 and N64 games, but it's really intended for everything before that. This is the best handheld with thumbsticks you're gonna get at this price, so if that's a big factor for you this is a no brainer.

But IMO the Retroid Pocket 5/Flip 2 is a substantially better device and more 'end game' for most people. Better ergonomics, better screen, better form factor for most folks. But at over twice the price, that's not an automatic call for most people.

What this really competes against is a used Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and that's a harder call. But still, a good device at a great price means you're unlikely to be disappointed.

Well, I did say "But at over twice the price, that's not an automatic call for most people." now didn't I? 🤣

But for that double the price you get a LOT so it's a worthwhile upgrade if one is less price limited but primarily looking to get the best bang for their buck. AKA: The best deal.

This is a great deal on a low-range handheld, but even at $110 I'd rather pay that much again to get a RP5/Flip2 and get the benefits of the screen, chipset, and form factor.

I 2nd this. This device is better unless you plunder on spending double on RP5. Can't beat this price and you can play some switch on it from what I've heard.

I looked up those two, and I see that they run Android 13. So, can I just make my phone do what this does somehow? Use it with a bluetooth controller. I have one of those XBox MOGA ones that you can clip your phone onto it. New in unopened box, so I don't know how comfortable or not it is to hold onto the phone pivoting over the controller. I've been out of this for quite some time, but would like a quick way to play classics, mainly RPGs like FF, probably try to wrap up SNES library ones first. I guess I could put in an SNES emulator and go from there. Galaxy S10e for a spare phone for now. Do you have a recommendation for a good place to look this stuff up?

This guide is kept updated and relevant: https://retrogamecorps.com/2022/0...ter-guide/

The main thing to making an Android device really feel like a dedicated gaming handheld is having a front-end for all your games like Emulation Station or Daijisho be your launcher, so that when you turn it on it lands directly on a way to easily launch all your roms.
