Whenever a deal like this is posted, there are loads of commenters saying things like "there are much cheaper magnatile knock-offs, so why spend the money on name brands? Bad deal, etc"
I would add to the conversation that magnet safety is a big concern for many parents (me included). While there is a VERY high chance that any of the knockoffs would be fine, there is always a chance that a broken piece and a swallowed magnet can cause major issues and a hospital trip. So what is the difference-maker? Metal rivets.
In short, there are hundreds of magnetic tile brands, and a handful are, what I would consider, the main competitors (Magna-tiles, Connectix, Picasso, MagFormers, PlayMags, etc). With that said, only three (Magnatiles, Connectix, and PlayMags) have metal rivets that hold the pieces together. Of course, a hammer could crack any of these brands, rivets or not, so most toddler play will be totally fine, but personally, any tiles that come into our house need to have metal rivets. Playmags is the best value of those three brands, which is why we have been using them. If there are cool unique sets that my kids are interested in, (marble run, race track, zoo animals, etc), we have no problem springing for the pricier Magna-tiles.
Im sure there are more competitors with rivets and more will enter the market, but just sharing to inform others.
Sorry for oversharing, but I dove deep into this toy a while back before investing in a few sets, and those were my findings. I'll likely share this on every one of these deals I see. Wishing nothing but the safest for all your little ones!
In summary, metal rivets are worth the upcharge, and this playmags brand is one of the "main competitors" that is very cost-effective. Also worth noting this this "100-pack" is actually 82. My initial purchase into the magnetic tile world was two of these packs. One is enough, but limits what you can make. About $60 for 164 magnetic tiles with metal rivets is a great deal. Hope this brings your kids as much happiness as it brings mine!
