Got this CPU when it was $125 a few months ago. Mixed feeling about it coming from a 3700x. While this CPU scored around 10% better on synthetic benchmarks and helped stabilize frame stuttering and 1% lows during gaming, it runs WAY hotter and consumes almost double the energy. Will ride it out until an eventual platform change, but you're better off going with the 5700x which performs within margin of error of this CPU, or the 5900x if you're looking for better performance and thermals/power consumption isn't a factor for you. Just my 2c.

This seems like a SOLID deal. You could probably build a solid 1080p gaming rig with this as a foundation + maybe a b580 for like $550? Unless the ddr4 prices have skyrocketed….

agreed. I got this from newegg a few months ago and I've been trying different AIOs and undervolt settings to get cooler temps while not losing performance. runs hot on idle (mid to high 30s). wish I'd just gotten a 5900x or higher if I was going to get something hot anyway

Thanks for the insight, I was considering upgrading from a 3700x, but your comments helps me make the right choice to keep the 3700x and wait for a better deal on the AM5 platform

Not sure about this "free" motherboard, but I purchased a 5800xt recently to upgrade an older 2700x system. My bottleneck on that machine for gaming was 58% CPU running a FE RTX 3070 GPU. After the upgrade, I noticed the machine was amazingly more snappy in real world performance and my bottleneck is now 100% GPU (as I was hoping for). The 5800x and 5800xt are no slouches.
I hear comments about the 5600x and 5700x being more power efficient, I believe they have 65w TDP but this 5800xt is 105w TDP. Keep in mind the wattage consumed is based on workload. In gaming, yes, you will be pushing the CPU generating heat, but at idle, it will not be consuming that much power. I am getting by with the stock cooler thus far, but on my other 5800x system I did upgrade to a 240 AIO for quieter performance as I was sitting near the case.

Whether or not this is a good fit for your needs depends on how much you already have. The 5800XT is still a powerful and capable option, though it is also true newer models are much faster in single core and use equivalent power. Those start at twice the price.
For someone with an older AMD B450 or any PCIe 3.0 motherboard and a few years old graphics card, this deal packing in PCIe 4.0 would provide a decent upgrade.
However, if you can spare $400, the AM5 platform and PCIe 5.0 will provide a longer useful product life.
Personally, I built a similar system for a child with this 5800XT CPU paired with a GeForce 4060-series card, and the CPU is able to perform well and be GPU limited at 60hz. It doesn't run hot, but I also am using a hyper 212 cooler because the fan noise/profile on the stock cooler was too high.
