Got one of these a few weeks ago, and it rules having to basically never charge it.

Why can't we mention "R" on slickdeals? Competitor?

ye but exposing your entire watch in the sun all day for minimal charges vs say the instinct 3 seem not worth the extra cost of the watch vs the non solar IMO

From many of the comments I read in various subreddits, the 40mm one doesn't have great solar charging because it is physically smaller, making the area for the solar cells smaller. I don't know how much better the 45mm is at charging, but that was ultimately what made me go with the regular Instinct 2 over the 2S. Some also commented the the 40mm was harder to read as well.

From my own experience (45mm solar gen 1, I live in New England): unless Garmin drastically improved cell efficiency, it is not worth it.
If you disable a lot of features (mainly GPS and BT, but activity tracking also eats a lot) and you spend plenty of time outside and it is really sunny, then, yes, you can run it indefinitely without charging.
Practically: not so much. Yes, it added some charge, but it was next to nothing.
Please don't get me wrong: it is amazing piece of hardware and battery lasts for almost 1 month. But solar feature simply not worth extra.

I have a couple of these, but the non-solar version. Research told me that the solar version is just a gimmick. Turns out this watch lasts forever on one charge anyway, not really needing a solar charge. Example: took my watch to Europe on less than 50% battery. Lasted me 2 weeks there, and I've been back for 2 weeks and still haven't had to charge it. And it charges super quick, maybe 30 minutes. So basically it needs charging once every 2-3 months. These watches are awesome. I'd say get the normal non-solar version if you want to really save money. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with this watch. Love mine.
