I have this unit.

Install was pretty straight forward and easy. The "window stand" is pretty silly and huge for what it needs.
it blows cold and works well, but it is VERY noisy… and not just a hum, a whole variety on buzzes, bangs, and rattles.

These are awkward and heavy, to wrestle into a window and way too many screws to install to the window. This one is 12 lbs heavier than the Midea, but my Midea never reaches that 12k btu that it is supposed to. In fact, it seldom reaches more than half that. It rarely pulls more than 700 watts, even at aggressive settings with temp set to 60F, sensor detached and Flashcool on with Eco off. They have tuned it to make it spec as more economical by overrating its output, IMHO. It takes me hours to cool a 13 x 19 room.

Thought about this but decided on the Midea unit for $9 more at my warehouse was better for us. It is the updated unit and will replace my recalled one, which works very well.

Are there no full controls on the unit itself?

How's Costco with return. Got the 8unit for living room a month ago and it's not enough power. Takes too long to cool down.To return it do I need to package it how it was ? Hard to put it back together
I got the Hisense 8K unit from Costco.com in June and also found it too small for our living room. I had already destroyed the box but took it back to my local Costco yesterday for a refund and then purchased the Midea 12K unit at the store. No problem.

In context of recent recall, this unit has the blower fan in direct line of sight, any dangerous buildup can be easily seen. The blower fan is also light color plastic vs. darker blue in midea.

Other than that, there's no high pitch whine noise from the compressor at startup.

Midea app wins, fan speed can be controlled via app, so instead of high medium and low, it can set via app to 25%. Which makes it more quieter than Hisense. But out of the box, Hisense is quieter in both medium and high.

Besides copper connections, refrigerants, and the weight of the oil-filled compressor, it's really just aluminum, plastic, fans, and styrofoam that comprise the price.A/C's shouldn't cost that much to make and Costco probably makes huge margins on them anyway.
many things shouldn't cost that much, hence its all relative. how does an iPhone cost more than a MacBook? or a tablet more than an 77" OLED TV...

Yikes. The Mideas have their quirks too (mine can sometimes tend to shake the window/wall a bit as it's spooling up from a dead stop), but mine at least is generally quiet/tolerable during normal operation. VERY quiet when it's not having to cool much and throttles itself down to ~100W.
Guess this answers the question I had of whether I should use the recall refund to switch to this unit instead.

Plus complex electronics, bearings, lots of unique parts that require complex machining or molding, etc... the fact that they can be had UNDER $300 with inflation these days is a modern miracle of mass production.
If you think ~$300 for a window air conditioner is bad, wait til you see $2000-3000+ refrigerators..
