This is incorrect.

PassMark CPU score:

5950x - 45,420
9700x - 37,163

The 9700x has an edge for single-core processing (due to the 5.5GHz clock vs 4.9GHZ for the 5950x). But for all the real heavy compute which is more commonplace, the 5950x is faster due to its 16-core/32-thread design (vs 8-core/16-thread design of the 9700x).

Obviously there are budget AM5 CPUs that beat the 5950x. These include:

9900x - 54,634
7900x - 51,405
7900 - 48,331

All three can be found for under $400. But for the price-per-score, this deal is a win...IF you already have an AM4 platform. As was said - AM4 is oooollllllddd, so I wouldn't go out building a new AM4 system.

For my case, I had a nice AM4 system with a 3700x....so upgrading to a 5950x (I got mine from a previous $330 deal) was a HUGE improvement for cheap.

AM4 is sooo old
It's old but power efficient. I have this one setup as a mini home server since released.

I was going to get this when it popped up at Micro Center for a little less but ultimately ended up fully upgrading I was able to get a 9700x new motherboard and new RAM for $425. I was able to sell my previous parts for $200 after shipping and feesThis processor is as good as am4 gets but the 9700x still outperforms it in every way. Benchmarking shows a massive difference between the two

Is the complaint the technology isn't useful anymore or about the pricing? This might be the last point for 5 years for me, so I'm milking the cycle refresh for at least 5 years if not 7-8 years with this, using AM4 to it's end.

I paid $800 for my 3950x back in the day 😥😥😥. Mine still run very smooth (LR & PS). Should I upgrade?

Everything changes. Whats important is if, for the time you made it, if it was a slickdeal and something that you use for its worth. But never compare across time what is a good deal. Good deals depend on the context of the time, at that time. My singular rule of principle when it comes to money, is not about the physical money amount even on the criteria I stated. My belief is, if you spend money on anything the most important question is if you used it for the purpose you asked for. By this ruling, if I spent $6,000 on a grand piano and use it every day and practice a lot, it is a much cheaper deal than a $1 clearance on a near-rotten mushroom at a grocery store which I left for a few days and ended up throwing away. This is an obvious exaggeration but that's the concept of a SD for me, the degree of slickness depends on value of USAGE, which I revised after 15+ years as a person saving money.

For those which this was long, the wisdom is, you buy anything you want as long as you use it. Not in theory, not in simulation of something in your head, but ACTUAL usage.

~40–55W idle on typical systems, that's not that efficient.

I use a Intel N150 for my always on home server, which I'm actually typing from now as its also a good HTPC for basic tasks, and its idle is ~0.8W – 1.5W.

Saying that this is power efficient is like saying its power efficient for a quarter ton pickup truck, but for true efficiency you should be looking at a Toyota Prius.
