Even this is EPP/EDU pricing, still not a good deal. I know this is a reputable brand but the price should be under $130 for 2 tb. Crucial T500 was $125 2 months ago

a little strange to put PCIe in the title. technically true as NVMe uses the PCIe bus but seeing it made me wonder if this was some strange PCIe x4 or x16 expansion card.

Title should say NVMe

pretty sure the M.2 covered it, it's how Samsung lists it (990 PRO w/ Heatsink 2 TB SSD NVMe™ M.2)

It makes more sense when you consider that it's referring to "PCIe Gen4." While you could add "NVMe" to the title, swapping it to "NVMe Gen4" would be less correct.

Fun fact, there are (well, were) PCIe AHCI M.2 SSDs, which are neither SATA nor NVMe. They were very uncommon and few people probably know they exist.

The 990 Pro's speed of around 7GB/s is more than enough for most use cases, even in the years to come. I think the main reason to choose a Samsung SSD like this is its reliability compared to cheaper, more questionable brands.

Hmm, my employee discount didn't kick in cuz of some "workplace discount exceeded" message. Must have bought something in the past that passed the threshold for employee discounts. Oh well.

Am I wrong in thinking the Crucial T500 is cheaper, arguably as fast if not faster, and runs much cooler ?

That's a PCIe 5.0 drive. For the vast majority of consumers PCIe 5.0 won't deliver noticible improvement, 4.0 like this card is more than fast enough. 5.0 really not a good value for most people, even people (like me) who care a lot about performance.
