How do you add apps to your account without downloading?

My devices are incompatible (ipads too old) and I want to add it to my account like its possible to do on Steam before it goes to paid. I intend to get some newer devices and would wanna use the app on them later.

Is that possible on the App Store?

I think you need to click "get" on a compatible device and then you can just cancel the download.
