It's a dutch oven. If you want the Le Creuset brand and reputation, it could be a good deal. The same design from Lodge runs you $50-75 at regular price: https://www.lodgecastiron.com/col...utch-ovens

Not quite. The Le Creuset is made in France and very high quality. The Lodge in that price range is made in China and meh quality. If you want to compare apples to apples then be fair and do the Lodge USA stuff which is more than this sale price.

Not sure which 5qt SS Dutch oven cost $20 nowadays.. they are at minimum $50 on average, all clad seconds are at least $120. Enamel is less reactive than SS and much thicker for heat retention, and I haven't really seen people baking bread in SS Dutch oven.

I have cooked on every type of cookware imaginable, from dime store aluminum crap to cheap stainless to various levels of clad cookware, cast iron, carbon steel, nonstick, and yes -- both cheap chinese and high-end french-made enameled cast iron from Staub and Le Creuset. You can cook on anything, but don't let anybody tell you that there's not a difference in performance and function between the cheap stuff and the best stuff.

Today my kitchen contains All-Clad stainless-clad pots, pans, and sauciers. It contains an inexpensive coated non-stick aluminum skillet. It contains a carbon steel wok and skillet. It contains a couple of Lodge cast iron skillets. And I have both Le Creuset and Staub enamel-coated cast iron dutch ovens (the cheap ones didn't last).

Each is best at different things. A cheap $20 stainless pot is fine for boiling water or steaming vegetables or heating up soup. It's deficiencies will become apparent when you start trying to brown or sear proteins or cook large batches or make sauces or prepare stovetop-to-oven dishes.

Le Creuset dutch ovens are an ideal tool for braising, for soups and stews that start with sauteed aromatics, for deep frying, for any stovetop-to-oven dish, and for use as a cloque when baking crusty breads. Le Creuset dutch ovens are very heavy. They are excellent at heat retention. They have heavy lids that fit tightly and trap steam, with a lid handle that's big enough to grab with an oven mitt on and safe to super-high oven temperatures. They have big handles that make it easy and safe to transfer from stovetop to oven, or to pour, even with oven mitts on. They have a super-high quality enamel coating that with proper care will last forever without wearing off into your food. And they are thoughtfully designed, with a bright interior that helps you develop a flavorful fond without burning your food.
I'm also a big fan of Staub, which is similar quality with slightly different pros/cons.

I was gifted a chinese import private label dutch oven in 1985, and I was gifted a Le Creuset dutch oven in 1986. They looked pretty similar. I still have the Le Creuset. I cannot remember how many decades ago I gave away the chinese one.

The cheap stainless pot and the cheap Lodge dutch oven are both probably good values. You can make good food on both of them. They will not retain heat as well. They will have more hot spots that could lead to scorching. They will not come with lids that seal as well, or handle high heats as well. They will be harder to clean. It's not likely that they will make you smile every time you use them.

This is a good deal. The 7.25 quart for $249 is a great piece that you'll have forever. I highly recommend it.

Cast iron retains heat better. Enamel is less reactive since it's basically glass that's fired on at around 2k degrees.
