These adapters I think are just tubes you put AA in so you can use any charger

I would prefer the ones that use 3xAA to D, but I've only seen them as Chinese generics (any 'brand name' ones I've seen so far are just the same thing) but the main reason to get these is if the generic ones don't fit too well in a product or if you want to use an alkaline, which you should not put in parallel because there can be some backcharging happening to make them leak (even though it shouldn't happen). Of course you could just put 1 in the 3x adapters. Mainly these probably fit picky products. I've had a few where the + side doesn't touch. Also had this happen with AAs too. The standard battery sizes do allow for variation so they shouldn't be making high tolerance products.

my chip-reading cat feeder uses 4 of those. But skipping since I would also need to buy a corresponding charger - my only takes AA&AAA

Even if you don't care about the D-spacers, Eneloop AA 2100mAh @ less than $2.50 each is the real deal. I searched for deal history and the closest I could find is 10 Eneloop AAs for $26 ($2.60 each), this lets you buy only as much as you want in multiples of 2.

led Lantern flashlight from sd deal precovid.
Low power is 2 D cells, high power is 4 D.
Luckily i had 2 D cell blanks from my costco enerloop value pack.

I just tried it after not touching it for years.
Still bright! EEK!

Does any company actually make a real C or D size rechargeable anymore? My old Radio Shack NiCads are starting to wear out and would prefer the extra power storage of the larger batteries.

Yeah, marked expired prematurely.
They have a 2-pack for $9.96 but limit is 3 total no matter what you select.
So if you want 8 adapters total you'll need to use 2 accounts.
