River valley is a fun family game. We play it with our 7, 9, and 11 year olds and everyone enjoys it including the adults. The kids also love it because it has some nice high quality components (the gems are very tactile and feel like good quality).

There is no player interaction which is great for our family (less fights and arguing since you don't take actions that target others). However, the decision you make in your turn will affect the state of what's available for the next player.

It also helps teach some strategy concepts to young kids as they think about how they want to earn points, and that they may have to change their strategy based on what is available when it is their turn.

Finally, it helps with math skills because everyone needs to calculate their points at the end.
