Those who purchase the 'Big Ideas' books frequently be sure to check your library whether you already own it or not. Cause this product page won't tell you.

I already own this book; bought it in May 2020. But Amazon is letting me buy the book again. I've seen this happen on multiple books; especially the 'Big Ideas' series. Every couple of years the old listing on Amazon vanishes. Probably because they update the edition or something. And then they let you buy the same book again. I almost hit buy today; but I wanted to check cause I had a feeling I've already bought it before. And sure enough — it shows up in my content, and lets me send the book to my devices, but clicking on the link via the content page takes me to a 'page not found' screen.

I think this is very disingenuous of the publisher or Amazon to be doing this. If the edition changes it should be clearly marked — 2nd edition, 3rd edition etc. But it's not sold as a new edition, it's the same book. We rely on Amazon telling us that we own a book already. I have 570 ebook purchases on Amazon; easy to forget if you own a book or not.

I unfortunately fell into this trap and bought it (while feeling I had already done so). Sure enough it's in my library, but the publisher is Penguin books, and this "new version" is published by DK.
*edit: it's a 2nd edition, verified this by looking inside the book copyright info

You can return this latest version. I doubt they'll have changed the content much — if any. I forget whether Amazon has an easy return button for ebooks — they don't have one for apps. But if you contact them via chat they'll definitely do it. Of course, it's a hassle, but if you're sitting idle can do it on the side on your phone.

Side note — for low value refunds, sometimes they find it easier to just issue $5 credit to your account applicable to your next purchase. Depends on the customer care rep on how much work they want to do.

I was in the same boat. Thought I had purchased it, but, it did not show it. Came back here to read the comments.

Fortunately, it is easy to return the book. I am on android app, similar on web. Go into your account. Find content library (may be manage content). Select books. The most recent purchase should be at the top. If you do not see it, wait a minute and refresh. There is a button to deliver or remove from a device. Below that click "see more". Click the refund button, select a reason, submit.

This is a new edition:
https://www.penguinrandomhouse.co...ook-by-dk/
Fully revised and updated with eight brand-new pages of content, The Science Book is a truly accessible and comprehensive route into a fascinating subject. Packed with scientific quotations, profiles of key figures and discoveries, and flowcharts and infographics that explain the most significant concepts clearly and simply, it is perfect for anyone with an interest in any of the sciences.

Amazon show March 11, 2025 as Publication date. Looks like it is accurate.

You are correct, even though Amazon should have clearly labeled it as a 2nd edition. I looked inside at the copyright info and it does say so.
Oddly though, the 1st edition comes in at 700+ pages where the 2nd is at 360. I'm not sure how this makes sense since the font is the same size.. perhaps there are more images in the 1st edition. A search on a topic did give approximately the same relative position in the book though (percentage-wise). Something to consider.
