As a side note, I recommend burning your old fishing line so that it doesn't become a hazard to wildlife.
Really depends on how hard you fish during the season. I do it around 2-3 years. But I'd reverse the braid and use another 2-3 years before I dump it. They do last a long while if they are taken care of.

Depends on what kind of fishing and what kind of line.
Mono? Yearly or every other. Can be a lot of memory depending on brand and # test.
Braid? Every 3ish yrs I'll reverse it if enough left otherwise replace on my most used rods. I have other rods with the same braid from 5 yrs ago, just dont get used much.
Hard-core guys will replace throughout the season. This is in reference to MN fresh water lakes for bass and walleye. Not Salt water.
