In case anyone's interested:
You can bloom the spices in a hot pan with a little oil stirring constantly for about a minute (or not):
1/2 tsp ground pepper
a pinch of cayenne pepper (and/or hot sauce)
1/2 tsp ground red chili pepper
1/2 tsp coriander (optional)
Dump the following into the hot pan to stop the bloom:
15 oz can of tomato sauce, any brand
1.5 tbsp brown sugar (add to taste)
1 tsp molasses (add to taste)
.5 tsp apple cider vinegar
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
salt to taste
Simmer (low heat, just slightly bubbling) for up to 2 hours until the volume is reduced by half, and the sauce turns rust brown-ish. Stir often (every 5-10 minutes).
You can add ketchup to increase the volume, if you wish. You can cook that down a little, too. It contains vinegar and sugar, so be judicious.
