Stain works best. You can use a latex paint but you need to thin it with water. Not sure about this kit but the Wagner comes with a little funnel that you thin and then time how long it takes to empty in order to get the right consistency.
When it works this type of sprayer is great. When it doesn't, it's a frustrating mess.

I have latex paint. So just add water and mix? What is the proportion mix of water vs paint?
What specific paint were you using and how did you prepare it?
I've bought these for staining fences and just thrown them away after ... the tips are plastic and not worth cleaning

No, these are for very thin liquids.
You want a higher quality one for poly and other more higher viscosity items. A decent one will cost a lot more than this.
