Great price for solid drives. I've been running five WD red drives 24/7 in my home NAS for about 20 years (previously 4TB ones, then upgraded to 14TB Pros a couple years when I needed more space). Never had a single error or failure

it's directly from WD, go Gold / Enterprise and select the first one, only the 14TB is on sale and have to buy 2 to get the $500 for 2 bundle price, can order up to 6 drives total (3 bundles) and discounted price will show in cart.

What's a good NAS device to use with this? New to NAS but kinda want to build one.
You get drives for your NAS, you dont get a NAS just because you have drives

Nice deal. They also have the two 18tb for $639.98 with an extra year of warranty. Not sure that it's worth it to anyone. $51 bucks for another year warranty on two drives. 🤷🏻 ♂️
You mean the RED Pro 18TB....
anyway, I still wonder how Gold is better than Red

FYI only. I'm not looking to start another flame war, but wanted to offer some alternative options for anyone interested. I'm not sure if the deal is still valid, but there was a Seagate external drive deal that has Exos ST18000NM000J 18TB inside, which could be shucked for ~$11/TB. The main thing to keep in mind is that it comes with a 1-year warranty, compared to the 5-year warranty you get with the WD Red Pro.

From what I've read, the Exos 18TB is considered reliable enough for most NAS and enterprise servers, though it can be a bit louder and use a little more power and might run a little more hotter than the Red Pro. Just my two cents! If anyone has personal experience with either drive, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Just want to give back to others in this community who have helped me along the way.

Cheers! Smilie

If you have an .edu email you can get a 15% coupon from Youth Discount, which bumps this down to $543.99 or $15.11/TB plus the extra year of warranty

Been running Reds in my home Synology NASs for over a decade now (currently over 55TB across two chassis, which isn't all that much nowadays).

I've had two failures, and WD has honored the warranties on both. A real 3- or 5-year warranty on hard drives that will be running 24/7 for years is worth a little extra money to me. Always register immediately after delivery!

In case anyone is wondering if this drive is CMR or SMR, it's CMR.... according to this Gemini AI answer:

"The WD 18TB Red Pro 7200 rpm SATA hard drive uses CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) technology, not SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording). According to a product brief from Western Digital. This is consistent with the WD Red Pro line being designed for NAS systems and high-intensity workloads."
