This is the older (discontinued) version of this controller with the ALPS sticks, not the newer hall effect version by the same name. The box will have a label on the front lower right of the box saying if it has the hall effect sticks.

Best buy sells the newer version for $45.

So I take the hall effect is a better version?

I have this one. It's a great controller overall. I use it for emulators on my iPad. It's heavier than some other 3rd party controllers, which i prefer.

From google Ai:
Hall effect and ALPS analog sticks are different technologies used in game controllers for detecting movement of the joystick. ALPS sticks use potentiometers, which are mechanical components that change resistance as they move, while Hall effect sticks use magnetic fields to detect position. Hall effect sticks are generally more accurate, have less drift over time, and often offer a smoother feel, but can be more expensive and power-hungry.

Hall effect uses magnetic fields instead of mechanical resistance to determine direction.
Mechanical resistance sticks are the ones that will drift over time as the resistance wears due to friction. Hall effect sticks should not encounter this drift after prolonged use like mechanical ones can.
