Weirdly enough, I remember my sister telling me about this. The best uses of rewards points would probably be to buy discounted gift cards. I personally use cashback to pay off my credit card bill or to transfer into a high yield savings account. I never would think to use it on buying gift cards.

FWIW, this is not a good use of Discover Rewards Points if you

have Costco [costco.com] or Sam's Club [samsclub.com] membership, and
order from Domino's frequently

because you can buy $100 Domino's gift cards for only $75 at the warehouse clubs.

For example, let say you have $80 of Discover Reward Points.

Scenario #1: Redeem $80 of reward points for $100 Domino's gift cards. You now have $100 GC + $0 cash.
Scenario #2: Redeem the reward points for $80 cash. Then buy $100 Domino's gift cards from warehouse club. You now have $100 GC + $5 cash.

So utilizing the least-value redemption choice results in a better value in this case!
