Plastic all day long. Metal if you get Hugh wind loads but otherwise the plastic does well.

I just picked up from curbside from Sam's yesterday and the boxes were big enough that it didn't fit in my 2013 pilot with all seats down.
Little less than a foot was out of trunk and I had to use ropes to secure trunk door to drive back!
It was okay as wasn't a hazard or something for me to drive back but would recommend pick up or something like that if you have to drive far.
