500 joule is barely above minimum level to be called a surge protector. For low level items only, lights and cheap electronics. ideal for expensive electronics if you want to destroy them when a surge occurs

Check your power or gas company for rebates on surge protectors. I got two for $2 through their site. Free home thermostats too.

On Wirecutter: "We tested the cheapest surge protector we could find at a local Walmart, the six-outlet Hyper Tough PS682B_B, to see how it would fare against our top contenders, and it failed spectacularly in pretty much every way."

is there such a thing as a power strip that filters the electrical noise a fan puts back into the line?

I have so many fans going sometimes I can see the noise on my security monitor and I think it affects wifi somehow

In the way back there was a brand of power strip for stereo audio equipment that filtered noise and surges. I can see it in my brain but can't remember the name.

For signals in the Wi-Fi frequency range (2.4GHz and 5.8GHz) adding clip on ferrite chokes should be enough. Place them as close to the fans as possible.
