about 6 months ago the game was bought by a new publisher to continue it. this is the old version.

This one still works well and will be compatible. Some notes about the new one:

* Our version includes an Automa solo mode, expanding the player count to 1-5 players. The solo mode will be available both in our version and separately (for those who already own Tokaido; the separate pack will include our version of the panorama cards).
* Our version is manufactured by Panda using our standards for component quality (e.g., the panorama cards will be upgraded to the same 310gsm cardstock we use for all our cards). For any components that need to integrate with existing Tokaido expansions, we're matching the composition for full compatibility.
* Our version includes a revised rulebook for clarity and accessibility (the gameplay is the same).
* Our version includes text on some cards and the character tiles to accompany the icons (so you don't need to reference the rulebook to decipher combinations of icons).
* Our version includes reference cards for each player that explain the locations.

Never heard of D&D. Is that like Warhammer 40k? /s

This is a tabletop game, "similar" in the realm of Settlers of Catan.

Tokaido gameplay involves moving along a track to collect resources. Being the first to a spot gets you the best choices, but you can't move backwards, so less total resources gain. Scoring is mostly based on set collection so less can be more if you get to score the combos.

As a starter game for families this would be a pretty good pickup. The main complaints for this version is how flimsy some of the cards are. But that doesn't matter if you expect cards to get scuffed and worn anyways regardless of initial cardstock quality (e.g. young kids)

For adult board game enthusiasts, I think the replayability of this game is a little on the low side, maybe something you pull out once every 6+ play sessions. The main attraction is how beautiful the game art and board design are, in which case getting a higher quality print (updated version) might be a better option.

fwiw Stonemaier version is $30 DTC and retailers are selling it for $25

This is the 10th anniversary version of it. It has all the micro expansions built in, though it has cheap components (mostly cardboard, no plastic or metal coins). It's not a bad version to get, I have one of the fancier Kickstarter versions and it's a nice light warmup game for 2-5. The bang for buck is tremendous, I paid almost a c-note over a decade ago for mine. There's a lot of pieces.
Stonemaier agreeing to publish it is wonderful, I know Jamey from Geekway and have been to their design days. He also was on CNN this week because he is part of a group suing over the tariffs. They may not print any or many of their version for the holidays this year if they really have to pay a $14.50 per $10 tariff on things. Getting a new version might be impossible.
