Cheaper one -> one chipset -> only for newer machines
More expensive one -> two chipsets -> supported by all machines
I am surprised no one mentioned the excellent customer support. I own both this and acasis TB3 enclosures. If you have any questions about your acasis, good luck. Acasis makes the best enclosures until this OWC one came out. OWC stands by its products and also has excellent customer support. That is worth a lot. If you are going to get a high end NVMe like the 4TB or 8TB SN850X, dont cheap out on the enclosure.

I was actually researching this enclosure yesterday because I knew I would be buying a new SSD soon during the BF sales. I originally wanted to buy a Samsung T9, but then realized that getting an M.2 drive and USB4 enclosure would be the better route.

This other enclosure was another top contender that seems reliable as well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...D1N0&psc=1

This one by Satechi is excellent as well. I am using it for the 8TB SN850X from Amazon for $550.00

This is one of the best and fastest external nvme enclosures but it's a little too pricey for me.

Instead, I bought an Acasis TBU405Air 40Gbps enclosure for $51 from their website with a BF discount. It doesn't cool quite as well as the OWC but it's good enough for me.

Be careful, Acasis has several enclosures that are similar in appearance with slightly different features. I bought the cheaper enclosure that only supports Thunderbolt 3/4 and USB 4.0 for my M4 mac mini. This version is not compatible with earlier USB types but there are options that do.

Very confusing as it says "is only compatible with Thunderbolt 4/3 USB4. It cannot be backward compatible with USB 3.2/3.1/4.0/3.0/2.0". So, for USB 4, does it work or not? If I were a betting man, I'd say it is only compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4 and not USB 4 at all (if that's even possible since TB4 supports USB 4). A true TB4 port is backwards compatible to all the lesser USB specs so I wonder what TB4 controller is in this thing?

Intel JHL7440 chipset.

The enclosures that support earlier usb versions include an additional chipset, Realtek RTL9210B, from the website.

Since I'm only using a mac mini m4 I went with the cheaper option but I think many would want the additional usb support.

Well now hang on - I don't understand. The one you link for 50 dollars no something everything. But the other one does… is that the right understanding??

Dealbreaker for me is it's only 10gb/s on Intel Mac so I'll have to pass on this. Only apple silicon gets 40 gb/s.

Careful if you see a 20 gbps enclosure, because the exception is USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. Mine only gets 10 gbps on my Mac Studio's TB4 ports.

This website discusses the various chipsets in nvme enclosures, including the OWC and Acasis models mentioned here. The OWC 1M2 typically gets around 3.1-3.2GB/s with a top tier nvme whereas the referenced Acasis around 2.6-2.8GB/s.

Both are great options. I chose Acasis because it's fast enough and cool enough while also a lot cheaper. Though, the OWC would have been my second choice.
