The Alps use a traditional potentiometer design. Without getting too technical, these potentiometers are a mechanical design with moving parts that measure voltage to determine the joystick's position. These potentiometers are more prone to wearing out quickly under regular use (due to the friction between a metal wiper and a graphite pad within the resistor), which leads to the tell tale "stick drift" problem we've seen countless times among modern controllers.

Hall Effect joysticks are fundamentally different because they use a magnetic contactless design to measure voltage, which is used to determine the joystick's position. This in turn means Hall Effect joysticks are significantly less prone to developing "stick drift" and should translate to an overall longer life span of the controller's joysticks.

I only know this because over a year ago, I decided to learn how to solder so that I could fix my own broken Xbox One and Series Elite controllers. I have since made a nice sum of cash buying, repairing, and selling "stick drift" controllers. Most can be repaired by replacing their individual worn out potentiometers, while some I've gone the extra length to change their joysticks to a Hall Effect design instead.
Hall effect or no, this is my absolute favourite controller of all time.
Fairly certain these are the ALPS, the picture of the product box is missing the hall effect icon.

Are these the updated ones with Hall effect sticks or the old ones with ALPS sticks?

Rolling the dice on this one. Sure, it's not with the Hall Effect sticks but this controller has pretty solid reviews and has to be better than the PowerA controller I have.

Been using this for 3+ years, it works great, especially for fighting games like Street Fighter. I prefer it over the Pro controller.

I used the $10 gift certificate they sent me to order the SN30. Should I cancel the order and get this instead? What is the difference between the two?

I have it for Switch. Good controller. It is sad that it doesn't connect to ModelY, well, it is connected but doesn't seem to work.
