I was lucky enough to stumble upon a class action lawsuit regarding the chemical "Cetylpyridinium Chloride" (CPC) which is an ingredient ubiquitous in all of these fluoridated mouthwashes. The lawsuit claimed that it caused excessive browning in some percentage of the population.
I kicked these rinses from my dental routine, and sure enough 6 months later at my next cleaning the browning mysteriously disappeared. Be warned that you may be part of the population that reacts in such a way to CPC, and that these rinses are hardly benefical to your oral health to begin with.
Sodium Fluoride is the active ingredient and is shown working for tooth decay. There are a small number of population that are adversely affected by fluoride as well but it's not accurate to say it's not beneficial.

Listerine doesn't have it but the zero alcohol Listerine has Sodium Lauryl Sulfate for some reason which isn't great. The alcohol version doesn't have either of these things but alcohol rinses aren't really recommended as they tend to dry out your gums. Guess just browse the mouthwashes and look at the ingredients till you find one you can live with?
