Besides the claimed improvements in battery life and USB-C interface, the mini2 pairs to the Garmin Explore app (instead of the older Earthmate app) which is marginally more featureful. The mini2 also can use Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS which ought to improve location accuracy and availability (not obvious from my experience that it does). I did the upgrade a while ago and was available to sell off my mini for $200 then - so, the upgrade only cost $200. I tell my self that the "improvements" were worth it
The true cost of this device is in the monthly subscription plan and the device cost will be marginal over the 4-6 years that you will use it.
