This comes with a fork of openwrt. It can also run vanilla openwrt though.
Hardware wise you're not going to get more hw for the money for a dual band ax router. It has 4x4 radios for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz and more flash and RAM than most other routers.

That's the cheapest router I've seen so far that supports wired 2.5Gbe.

I've tested routers from Linksys, TP-Link , ASUS, MSI,and GL-iNET. Firmware makes or breaks the hardware, and many vendors have atrocious firmware with glaring bugs.

GL-INet's firmware is on par or better than ASUS, which was my previous #1 preferred router firmware vendor.

Gl-iNET provides a polished experience with many advanced controls including firewall and VPN settings. It also allows for thousands of openWRT plugins including AdGuard, PiHole etc.

I haven't fully tested this specific model, but I have a GL-iNET pocket router and would easily buy this model.

Are you comparing it to the stock ASUS firmware or ASUSMerlin?

There's a huge difference, as ASUSMerlin comes with AMTM preinstalled, meaning it can also run things like PiHole or Wireguard right out of the box.

OpenWRT is always going to pull ahead when compared to OEM firmware. That's partly why projects like it exist.

The NanoPi R5C has two 2.5Gb ethernet ports and regularly goes for around $50.

If you need more 2.5Gb ports, there's switches for around $45.

The Flint 2 is definitely the cheapest solution with minimal tinkering, though.

I have this router and the processor in this thing is powerful enough to run a commercial VPN (protonVPN in my case) all the way up to 1Gbps. Maybe it can do more but that's all the speed I have. Their previously most powerful router could only handle 500Mbps. Most routers wouldn't even touch 500Mbps if it could even run a VPN. Whole home VPN is so nice to have.

Is using nanopi hardware the most cost-efficient way to make a simple mesh network?
