Hardware wise you're not going to get more hw for the money for a dual band ax router. It has 4x4 radios for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz and more flash and RAM than most other routers.
GL-INet's firmware is on par or better than ASUS, which was my previous #1 preferred router firmware vendor.
Gl-iNET provides a polished experience with many advanced controls including firewall and VPN settings. It also allows for thousands of openWRT plugins including AdGuard, PiHole etc.
I haven't fully tested this specific model, but I have a GL-iNET pocket router and would easily buy this model.

There's a huge difference, as ASUSMerlin comes with AMTM preinstalled, meaning it can also run things like PiHole or Wireguard right out of the box.
OpenWRT is always going to pull ahead when compared to OEM firmware. That's partly why projects like it exist.
If you need more 2.5Gb ports, there's switches for around $45.
The Flint 2 is definitely the cheapest solution with minimal tinkering, though.
