For doing it all online, a number needs to be transferred. A throwaway google voice/tello number can be obtained for this purpose.

So if we cancel within 3 days the $35 activation fee is refunded and what about the monthly charge for the first month ? If we cancel, do we have to pay-up the balance amount on the phone (i.e. the amount that was discounted on the phone) ?

ATT buyers remorse policy states, 3 days to waive activation and 14 days for the plan cancellation. You will be charged for the days the phone was active in the line. The discount on the phone is upfront, you don't need to pay any balance.

Yup. Depending on the day the account is activated, they will generate a bill with activation fee and one months charge and in that bill there is an option called "don't recognize this fee" under activation fee which you can click to instantly get rid of activation fee (even after 3 days because it's instant). For the actual charge you might need to call them if it's more than a day

So, let me get this straight.

1) Order phone
2) Schedule appointment to pick it up
3) Sign up for ATT
4) Go home and cancel the next day
5) Only pay $50 and get a new, unlocked phone?
