It's more accurate to say that research is mixed. There is a lot of research that supports the idea that it is helpful, we just don't know the best amounts, when to take it, who should take it, etc etc. Here are three studies I quickly located on google scholar that all seem to come to similar conclusions. It seems like it should help, but more research is warranted. I think the bottom line does come down to you may just be creating expensive pee, but it might help. Personally, as someone that had multiple surgeries related to a septic joint in his 30s and is now concerned about early osteoarthritis, I'm taking joint supplements because I want to put off total joint replacement as long as possible. Maybe I'll waste a couple thousand over the next decades, maybe I'll get to put off further surgeries until I'm older. The choice comes down to the individual to decide what they want to do. As always, maintaining a healthy weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise are the best things an average person can do to avoid damaging their joints.

Conclusions:
Strong evidence of 5–15 g/day dose of COL in improving joint pain and functionality. However, further research is required to understand the exact adaptive mechanisms.

Changes in body composition and strength with 15 g/day COL and resistance training were not as prominent in young recreationally active participants as they were in elderly sarcopenic men.

Exercise and vitamin C seemed to aid collagen synthesis. 15 g/day COL was more effective than 5 g/day COL in elevating collagen synthesis, hence 15 g/day may be a more effective dose. COL should be consumed prior (~ 60 min) to exercise to maximise collagen synthesis.

Evidence for their clinical efficacy is lacking and mechanistic and targeted clinical research is required to determine if and how collagen hydrolyzates may help to improve joint health. Also, collagen hydrolyzates have the potential for use in a healthy population without OA, as a preventive and prophylactic measure. Collagen hydrolyzates are considered an attractive nutritional supplement for preventing bone and joint degeneration in early stages of OA, but their ability to treat and reverse advanced joint disease remains highly speculative.

Collagen hydrolysate has a positive therapeutic role in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis: potentially increasing bone mineral density, having a protective effect on articular cartilage and, primarily, providing symptomatic relief of pain. However, further studies are needed to determine the pathogenic factors involved in osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, its early diagnosis, and from which stage of life it would be recommended to start supplementation, as well as the suitable dosage, in order to achieve significant therapeutic potential.

I saw the $5 off for 1 time purchase and 30% off for subscription separately, but both applied if you follow OP's directions.

How safe is collagen intake? Is it similar to taking a protein supplement?

I have the same question, but I wouldn't trust randos on Slickdeals to answer it.

Currently, research does not support evidence that taking collagen actually provides a benefit.

Ill edit this post to provide links when I can. Possibly just a waste of money, like most supplements are.
