Five years ago, the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star, defeated Darth Vader and the Emperor, and drove the remnants of the old Imperial Starfleet to a distant corner of the galaxy. Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting twins. And Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of Jedi Knights.
But thousands of light-years away, the last of the Emperor's warlords, Grand Admiral Thrawn, has taken command of the shattered Imperial fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the New Republic. For this dark warrior has made a vital discovery that could destroy everything the courageous men and women of the Rebel Alliance fought so hard to build.

You might be talking about "Thrawn", which was a standalone until it received some sequels, making it "book 1". This is Heir to the Empire, the book that actually introduced Thrawn (as well as Mara Jade) and the canon sequel to the original trilogy before the prequel trilogy was even made. Word of warning if you read this it may make you dislike the Disney sequel trilogy even more. opinions vary…
Can't believe they just tossed the entire extended universe as "legends". I read dozens of these books when I was a kid and they were so much better than "somehow... Palatine returned".
The series is great for any SW fans. Not a bad price, but the Slickest deal for these books is using your library card and using Libby for either the ebook or audiobook. I recommend the audiobook as it is quite immersive in its presentation.

Did they change the book 1 naming? I already have the ebook Star Wars Thrawn: Book 1. Doesn't call it Heir to the Empire

Palpatine returned in the Legends universe also, and it really wasn't that much better of a story.
Honestly, I think overall people are looking at Legends with nostalgia glasses and only remembering the good stuff. There was tons of dreck in those books.
The Thrawn trilogy was great though. Zahn holds up a lot better than most other authors from the franchise.

I didn't thumbs down you btw. I didn't read the books where he came back as a clone, but in general yes, there were duds. The point is that the new movies could have taken the cream of the crop, instead they did what they did.

Have you seen this fan-made audio comic? Is it the same as these ebooks?

This series, for the rest of my life, will be the true successor to Return of the Jedi and nothing Disney says or does will change that. They can try to relegate it to some ridiculous "Legend" status, but I refuse to accept that.

I have genuinely enjoyed most of the Disney content that I've seen. The main trilogy wasn't great, but I've enjoyed the other movies and the shows I've seen so far (haven't watched all of them yet, though)

This book along with the other two in the series are the BEST Star Wars outside of the original trilogy and it's not even close IMO. Thrawn is amazing. Unfortunately, Disney's is laughably bad compared to Timothy Zahn's. Read this trilogy and then watch/rewatch Ashoka. Disney's Thrawn will come across as a bumbling idiot that constantly fails yet always claims he meant for the outcome to happen. It's laughably bad compared to book Thrawn.

I agree, a lot of the content is great. But it's sad to see the mainline trilogy get such shabby treatment.

Thrawn reminds me of James Spader in the Blacklist. Basically a mastermind who is in charge at all times except for the exceptionally rare and critical lapse.
