Thanks it looks like the performance is very unreliable once the cache is exhausted. In my experience once the cache runs out the performance drops of course, but tends to stay relatively consistent.

Maybe someone can clear this up Smilie .. I've read on the 'net (though it's steered me wrong before Smilie ) that in practical day to day use you don't see much of a performance difference between this and the pci 3.0 in say a desktop or laptop PC

unless you're transferring a lot of files all the time.. obviously I can see how the pci 4 speeds would be good for say a PS5 user Smilie but would you guys recommend just going with a cheaper pci 3.0 drive that (I'm guessing) would give "more bang for your buck" in terms of being a bigger drive for less money?

I also heard .. although again I could be wrong.. that pci 4.0 drives run hot and really do need a heatsink... can someone clarify? (again say for desktop use)

I'm not aware of any cons but you really don't need a heatsink. I've had a nvme drive in my ps5 since launch and never ran into any issues when gaming. They do not get that hot.

anyone have any insight as to if these would be good for a Plex server as far as storing the tv shows/movies and playing them back local and remotely? i've searched and searched and the best comments i can find are a thumbs up

The culture to intentionally grab attention by putting 2TB (or other lofty specs) next to a price tag that represents a different model (usually lowest or lower end), is something prominent at SD that retailers on Amazon and other sites do too. Shame to see it rampant here though

I was about to pull the trigger on a P5 Plus for my new laptop (the Asus TUF 16 with the 7600S), but this is just a few bucks more and has better performance. Didn't even realize Crucial had released this, so thanks OP!

Wouldn't even a LARGE platter drive have sufficient speed for good price (like 16TB for $200-250)? You don't even have to worry about repeated read/write cycle either.
Most likely, the bottleneck probably will be in 1Gigb or (even 2Gigb) network speed for media streaming.
